Abstract:
This coverage contains the major highways of Yellowstone National Park. It does not include service or residential roads. The highways are represented by line segments with attributes attached to them. Attributes include: a common name, road type, road surface, speed limit, date the road segment was surveyed and the surveyor's name. Line segment length is determined by speed limit zones. Data was collected using a differential GPS in 1997.
Purpose:
The data set was developed using GPS to replace an existing road coverage which was digitized from USGS 15-minute maps. The old data set contained known errors.

All attribute fields for each arc have been entered in the field as required by the GPS data logger and double checked through attribute queries in ARC/INFO vs. 7.02 for UNIX. The digital spatial database was kept current with project progress, GPS data were brought into Arc/Info within days of field collection.

Verified by visual comparison of the GPS data to the USGS Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) on the screen in the same geographic area. DRGs comply to the standards associated with USGS 7.5 minute maps. After differential correction of the GPS data the horizontal accuracy is estimated to be within 5 m. The base station used was about 200 km away (Jackson, WY). Accuracy changes with distance from base station by about a meter per 100 km. Therefore the accuracy varies within the coverage.

All roads of Yellowstone National Park were surveyed. Arcs are defined by speed limit segments and intersections. Attributes attached to each arc include: TYPE, SURFACE, SPEED, DATE, SURVEYOR. TYPE describes the type of use of the road (primary, scenic, residential, etc.), SURFACE describes the surface material of the road (paved, unpaved, etc.), SPEED contains the speed limit of the road segment in miles per hour (15, 25, 35, 45,55), DATE describes the date of survey (between 05/25/1997 and 06/20/1997), SURVEYOR contains the name of the surveyor.
